{"id":2560,"date":"2024-10-07T11:05:10","date_gmt":"2024-10-07T11:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecks.co.uk\/?p=2560"},"modified":"2026-01-10T05:46:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T05:46:14","slug":"powis-castle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecks.co.uk\/?p=2560","title":{"rendered":"Powis Castle"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"2560\" class=\"elementor elementor-2560\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b0ecfd3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b0ecfd3\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-159211d\" data-id=\"159211d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32e40a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32e40a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The early history of\u00a0 Powis Castle is somewhat chequered, with the self proclaimed Prince of Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd of Gwynedd, destroying Powis Castle, forcing Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn, (his arch enemy), into exile.<\/p><p>However, within three years Llywelyn\u2019s principality had crumbled leaving Gruffudd of Powys able to regain his lordship and rebuild the castle.\u00a0\u00a0The castle and estate were eventually sold to Sir Edward Herbert in 1587 and remained in their care until 1952.<\/p><p>George Herbert had inherited the title\u00a0 of 4th Earl of Powis, and in 1902, together with\u00a0his wife, Violet, focussed on remodelling the castle and garden.<\/p><p>During the Edwardian period the estate was at its height, with important guests arrived every weekend throughout the winter season including, in November 1909, the Prince and Princess of Wales.<\/p><p>However, with George suffering three family tragedies, this golden era was not to last.<\/p><p>In 1916 his elder son, Percy, was fatally wounded on the Somme; in 1929 Violet died after a car accident and in 1942, his younger son, Mervyn was killed in an aeroplane crash during active service.<\/p><p>With no direct heir to the castle, on his death bed in 1952, George bequeathed Powis to the nation, in the care of the National Trust.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-381b91c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"381b91c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7b58d46\" data-id=\"7b58d46\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-970d718 elementor-widget elementor-widget-shortcode\" data-id=\"970d718\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"shortcode.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-shortcode\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The early history of\u00a0 Powis Castle is somewhat chequered, with the self proclaimed Prince of Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd of Gwynedd, destroying Powis Castle, forcing Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn, (his arch enemy), into exile.
